Hainan borders the Philippines towards the east, Malaysia and Brunei towards the south, Indonesia (Natuna Islands) towards the southwest, and Vietnam towards the west. The surrounding sea area totals 2,000,000 square kilometers (772,000 square miles).

Hainan is the second largest ocean island and the smallest land province in China. It occupies an area of 35,000 square kilometers - 13,510 square miles, much of which is made up of tropical primeval forests, mountain ranges, rivers and beaches with nearly 600 species of animals. It's great mineral reserves are rich in oil and natural gas, zirconium, titanium and oil shale to name a few.

Because of the mild climate, and favorable environment, Hainan is regarded as a long life island. Many young seek the island attempting to be one with nature, the old seek its natural beauty and comfortable surroundings. This abundance of sunlight, heat and water is also a huge benefit to farmers as crops can be cultivated any time of year and many yield produce two to three times each year. Grain crops, which have the highest distribution and highest yield in Hainan, include rice, upland rice, shanlanpo rice, wheat, sweet potato, cassava, taro, maize, Chinese sorghum, millet and beans. Hainan's industrial crops include sugarcane, hemp, peanut, sesame and tea. Hainan is rich in a variety of fruits such as pineapple, litchi, longan, banana, plantain, citrus, mango, watermelon, parambola, and jackfruit. This rich island land can boast a produce of over 120 different kinds of vegetables. along with numerous tropical crops such as rubber plant, coconut palm, oil palm, betel palm, pepper, sisal hemp, lemon grass, cashew, cocoa and others. It is also rich in medicinal herbs. There are over 4,000 different kinds of plants growing on the island and over half can be used for medicinal purposes.

In Hainan, the cities Haikou and Sanya are where most tourists congregate. Haikou, known also as the 'Coconut City', is the capital of Hainan Province. The city is the provincial administrative center of Hainan as well as being the focus of the local economy, culture and transportation. Haikou stands at the northern end of Hainan Island, on the west bank of the Nandu River estuary. This river is the longest on the island and the city's name appropriately means 'Mouth of the Sea'. With the sea on three sides, Haikou enjoys a long coastline that features excellent bathing beaches and sea side resorts. Holiday Beach is the most popular of these, while Xixiu Beach is where the National sailing and windsurfing teams train and hold competitions.

Hainan's history traces back to the year of 110BC, when Emperor Hanwu was the first to assign an administrative office there. When the People's Republic of China was founded in 1949, Hainan was considered part of Guangdong Province. In 1988, Hainan became a province, while at the same time an economic development zone was founded in this fishing island. Today Hunain has a population of 7.11 million, with approximately 1 million being made up of ethnic minorities.
