Teach English in China! American and European volunteers share their vast backgrounds in teaching, business, and life in general. Many English teaching volunteers employ special activities that consistently worked in their own classroom, and find that they are no less exciting in China. We believe the best way to teach a language is to introduce the students to the country's culture at the same time. Volunteers bring new teaching materials, family and community photos, tapes and books to show, but most importantly they bring their life experiences and stories to share with students. In this way, students are better able to understand other cultures, and in turn, more easily understand the English language. Working in small groups, volunteers encourage interaction and exchange, and by providing encouragement, stimulate students to excel.

Each summer, Global Volunteers provides teachers to help teach students conversational English in a non-traditional setting. Often, classes are held outdoors or through the use of field trips to stimulate student interests and participation.

Our "English Corner" enables the community at large to be served by volunteers. Through the use of radio call-in talk shows and TV programs, thousands of people in the viewing and listening audience who might not normally have the opportunity to hear native English speakers can also learn about American and European culture.

Through the radio, local listeners' questions and concerns are addressed directly by the volunteers. Thanks to the generous volunteers English teaching, students have the confidence to participate in English Speech Contests.

In 1998, a speech contest representing all levels had over 70% of the prize winners previously receiving training from Global Volunteers. Many excellent young English speakers were influenced to continue English studies and have emerged as accomplished young adults.

Volunteer Work Abroad Programs were initiated through a partnership of the Haikou Municipal Education Bureau on Hainan Island, the Teachers Education University in Kun Ming, several university and secondary schools in Xi' An, and the Education Committee in An Shang Village, China and Global Volunteers, 375 E.
